PIANEZZE
(Grotte di Castro)
It is one of the unknown areas of
Etruscan necropoli that rose on a tufaceous height (20 hectares) called "La
Civita" also called Tiro by others. The Etruscan ruins here are mainly tunnels,
reservoirs and tracts of the defensive belts made of great blocks of tuff. Along the back
which descends in a marked slope towards the valley below there are various chamber tombs
of the VI cent. B.C. distribuited on more than one level with long, monumental corridors
to gain access. The burial areas sometimes have several chambers, where the dead were
placed in dug out graves in the floor or in niches positioned in the walls. Nearby towns
included Vigna della Piazza, of Valle Muje, Maccarino, Toiena, Le Sane, and Pian
dellAia.Many graves show double sloping sculptured ceilings reproducing the wooden
warp of an Etruscan house where several structural elements are outlined with ribbons and
coloured bands.
