Where
Located in Bolsena, delightful and suggestive village situated on the shores of the homonymous lake.

History
The Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena is in the Fortress of Monaldeschi Cervara . This Fortress is located in a small area of the ruined Roman city of Volsinii.
Inside, some remains of the medieval door, which was an access to the built up area were found. This built-up area was founded by the inhabitants of Orvieto in 1295 before the construction of the first fortress.
Also remarkable are the remains of a military fortress dating back to the XIV century. These ruins include the lower part of the fortress tower as well as its wall. They both face the lake and here is exactly the place where the existing fortress, dating back to the early XIV century was erected by the Monaldeschi della Cervara, lords of Bolsena until 1451.
The fortress comprises four towers set up on both sides of a trapezoidal building. The interior was renovated in 1525.

Description
Divided into six sections, this museum has the geological, archaeological and naturalistic documentation coming from the territory of Bolsena. Opened in 1991, it is one of the most important museums of Lazio due to its production of culturally interesting multimedia and printed material At the main entrance a large decorated Greek marble sarcophagus with scenes of the cult of Bacchus, found during some archaeological excavations made in Poggio Moscini dominates the museum. In the second atrium is the Roman Lapidarium with epigraphs. In the geological section are several samples of rocks, including a large "volcanic bomb" (fragment of molten lava erupted from a volcan). The age of metals is testified by finds of the Bronze age and Iron from the depth of the lake. Some funerary supplys belong to the Etruscan civilization, some pottery, lamps and terracottas testify the presence of the Roman civilization, such as the famous "Throne of the Panthers", dedicated to the cult of Bacchus. In the medieval section some ruins of the ancient town’s fortifications as well as a large display of pottery found in the "butti" of the fortress are still visible. The last section of the museum is dedicated to nature.
